Guided Research
Who is Guided Research for?
The older student, or the parent of the younger student, will be expected to do some independent reading, attend some local concerts where available, complete music theory workbooks as assigned, listen to recordings, read and post on relevant online forums (such as the SAA discussion boards) or join and participate in relevant social networks, etc.
While the focus of parent research is slightly different from an older students' research, the time commitment between lessons is similar, and should be factored into regular weekly practice time.

How does it work?
For parents: Basic music theory or basic knowledge of how to read music is necessary in order to best help your young child learn. A grasp of how to help your child practice effectively is also crucial! You will be assigned articles, blogs, social media / discussion board threads, and music theory worksheets to help you according to your level. Prior knowledge of music is helpful but by no means required.
For older students:
A music theory workbook (at the rate of at least a page a week) will be assigned. Students are expected to read and complete the theory assignments, and turn them in via email.
Videos or recordings of professional musicians will be suggested and the students are expected to find and listen to them between lessons.
For everyone:
I strongly encourage all my students to research local concerts in their area and attend, support, and meet locally performing musicians.
